One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish - Google New Favicon

I noticed Google favicon that is shown in tab browser has changed. It was a rectangle, with a capital G at the center. Now it’s a small g inside.

When I first saw it, I thought it’s temporary for an special event. I wrong, it remained still.
I don’t like google new favicon.
But, look at what google say :

“The design process we went through was rigorous and interesting, so we thought we would share more of it here. We tried in total more than 300 permutations. It was much harder than we thought at first.”

wow..after permutation that much, and they choose this one ?

Why change something that works and people are familiar and comfortable with?
